I’ve waxed poetic about Winc (formerly Club W) wines before (in this post). I mean, what is there not to love about $13 bottles of exclusive wine that are picked especially for you and shipped straight to your door? While most people prefer Winc to recommend wines to them based on answers to “Palate Profile” questions, I admittedly like picking out the wines for myself. This month, I decided to exercise a little trust and leave my wine delivery in the hands of Winc. Turns out, they know me better than I thought!
2016 Outer Sounds Sauvignon Blanc
One of my all-time favorites whites is Sauvignon Blanc, so I was excited to find a bottle in my delivery. This one is from the Marlborough region of New Zealand, which is known for producing some stellar Sauv Blancs. Upon pouring, the wine has that pale, almost-clear coloring indicative of many Sauvignon Blancs and the bright nose is reminiscent of summertime. One sip and it’s everything I love in a Sauvignon Blanc – you get that mouth-puckering acidity, hints of tropical citrus fruit, and just enough grassiness on the finish.
Would I buy this again? In a heartbeat. It’s crisp, refreshing, and definitely deserves a place in my picnic basket.
2015 Rosa Obscura Red Blend
I was particularly excited to pop open this bottle because it’s a blend made from some of my favorite varietals: Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose is soft and floral, while the palate bursts with juicy plum, cherry, cassis, and violet. It sort of reminds me of a drinkable perfume with its floral bouquet, velvety mouthfeel, and the way it lingers on your tongue long after you’ve taken a sip.
Would I buy this again? Absolutely. It’s a easy-drinking red that is special enough for a romantic spring date or alongside a slice of decadent chocolate cake.
2014 La Forza Super Tuscan
I love the concept of using a comic strip as label art. It’s fun, gives nod to the bold, full-bodied blend inside, and this one is actually designed by Marvel comic book artist Brent Schoonover. I admittedly don’t drink a ton of Italian wines, but I was excited to dive into this Toscano blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. The palate boasts blackberry, black cherry, and leather, with subtler hints of chocolate.
Would I buy this again? In all honesty, probably not. It was a little bitter for my taste. Perhaps it’s because Italian wines aren’t really my forte or maybe I really should have paired it with food. Side note: Winc pairs each of their wines with recipes, which they give you the links to in your delivery booklet, so you can practice your cooking AND pairing skills! Ultimately, La Forza Super Tuscan was an okay wine. It didn’t pack quite the punch I was hoping for and the flavors were less distinct than I would have liked, but this month’s shipment gave me a chance to try a wine I’m less familiar with.
